Omotenashi is the Japanese art of guest centric hospitality and an integral part of Japanese culture. It aims to create a memorable experience through flawless preparation and by looking after guests with infinite care and attention.
And members of the Market Harborough WI certainly got treated to a wonderful example of Omotenashi at their monthly meeting last night. Yuko Dixon joined us for a talk about Japanese culture and a demonstration of her cookery craft. By skillfully weaving information about Japan and the ingredients she uses into her cookery demonstration Yuko taught us about the aim to use seasonal ingredients, how school children in Japan learn about a balanced diet from an early age and how to use soy sauce as a condiment – not a sauce.
There was also a raft of useful cookery information about ingredients like sushi rice, shredded dried fish and homemade Terryaki sauce while Yuko cooked Japanese Curry (I bet you didn’t see that one coming!) and made sushi rolls.
And the final highlight of the evening: Members were invited to sample all that delicious food. It was super tasty and a great experience.
