A lot of our members share some special interests – be this gardening, crafting, reading, baking or walking. Like-minded members have therefore formed Clubs under the umbrella of the Market Harborough WI to meet regularly and enjoy their particular favourite activity. Members can join any of the clubs or indeed start a new one!
New members are always welcome in the clubs – please use the contact from on this website to get in touch or email firstname.lastname@example.org and put the name of the club you are enquiring about on the subject line.
Due to the restrictions on group meetings imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic some of our clubs had to suspend activities. Others have moved online or modified operations to accommodate social distancing. Please see details for each club below – the information will be updated in due course as the restrictions are eased. If in doubt, please feel free to contact us by email @ email@example.com
At present there are five active clubs:
Allotment Club – Still meeting at the allotment, but observing social distancing
Following an incidental conversation at a Bake Club meeting, members of the WI applied for and obtained a large plot at 41A Cricket Pitch View at the Stevens Street Allotments owned by the Market Harborough and the Bowdens Charity Since taking it on in 2018 we have transformed the plot, set up a green house, added some pallet furniture and grown a whole range of fruit, vegetables and flowers. All of us were ‘newbies’ to allotment management, but over time and with the kind help of other allotment holders things have taken off. During the growing season the group meets every Monday afternoon from 2pm at the allotment (and sometimes more often if plants need watering). Out of season we favour the warmer environments of a local coffee shop or restaurant for the planning of next year’s planting.
Bake Club – Suspended until further notice
The Bake Club, run by Tina and Gemma is held at the Fortnum Show Room, Riverside Industrial Estate. The meetings are usually held every 4 to 6 weeks on a Thursday commencing at 7 P.M.
Each month there is a suggested ingredient i.e chocolate or a theme such as Halloween. Every member brings a dish of their choice (and making). The bakes can be sweet or savory. The meetings are a social event, chatting whilst drinking tea or coffee and sampling each others creations. there is also a fun raffle. And at the end of the evening we can take a selection of goodies home!
Book ‘Angels’ – Now meeting online via Zoom. Please contact us for access details
A group of WI members who enjoy reading started up “Book Angels” a couple of years ago. It is a very informal group, usually meeting on the third Monday of the month in the bar at The Angel Hotel, High Street, Market Harborough, where we discuss the chosen book over a drink. We decide as a group what books to read – usually all read the same book, but sometimes we have a free choice based around a specific theme. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t had time to finish reading the book in time for the meeting – just come along and join in the discussion.
Craft Club – Virtual Craft Club posts on the website until meetings can be resumed
The Craft Club usually meets on the first Thursday of the month in the Lounge of the Congregational Church on Bowden Lane, Market Harborough. Everyone is welcome to come and try out different crafts from knitting for charity projects to card making and decorating pottery. This year we are hoping to make recycled gift bags, try some Indian mirror work embroidery and create our own Christmas wreaths. You can bring your own project to work on or share your knowledge of a favourite craft while having a cup of tea and a chat. There is a small charge to pay to cover the cost of the room and the cost of materials if applicable.
Walking Club – Suspended until further notice
The Walking Club is a group of like-minded members that enjoy a ramble and a chat. Each walk is about 3.5 miles and usually will take about 1.5 and 2 hours to complete. We tend to finish our walks at locations where the group can have a drink and a natter to round things off. The Walking Club meets on the last Sunday of the month – weather and ground conditions permitting. All you need to join them is suitable footwear!
