Guess that Dance!

The May Monthly Meeting of the Market Harborough WI featured an introduction to South American Music by Los Amigos – a group of three friends based in Leicestershire.

The members of the group are all passionate about latin american music – and since they also happen to be music teachers they not only provided interesting bits of information about the various aspects of the music, they also had us guessing tunes and dance rythms.

While Verity Morris with her clarinet and Neville Cooper on the guitar are more involved in carrying the tunes, the percussion instruments deliver most of the foot-tapping-inducing rythm. And there were a lot of them! Harry Heppingstall demonstrated a cross section – from the traditional two pieces of wood to the ‘fish box’ with guitar strings to bongos and a peruvian box drum – and then proceeded to demonstrate how many he could play at the same time without loosing the rythm. At times there seemed to be more than the regulation two hands and two feet involved! It was an entertaining evening that had us tapping our feet and humming along long after the music had finished.
