MHWI Allotment Greenhouse News

Well we have actually done it!! There is glass in the greenhouse. Huge thanks to all those who have helped along the way. We now look forward to planting our allotment, and nurturing seeds and cuttings in the greenhouse.

We generally meet on a Monday afternoon, subject to weather. Any of you are welcome at anytime, even if you wish to just have some peace and quiet. Gardening is really not essential!!

During the summer we shall host a couple of social events, showcasing produce from the allotment. Please look out for announcements during the coming weeks.

Next Wednesday Louise Brooks will be coming to talk to us about all the materials and methods she uses to make many different styles of hats.   Hopefully, we will come away inspired with ideas for those special occasions that pop up at this time of year when a hat might be required, such as summer weddings.   Also, don’t forget you might need a hat if you are joining us for ‘Ladies Day’ at Leicester Racecourse on 6th July!

June in bloom - purple daisy flowersIn addition, there will be a Plant Sale next Wednesday.   Plants will be provided by Fiona or from our very own allotment.   If members have any plants they wish to donate, please bring them along –  they will be very much appreciated.

Also, don’t forget we have a bumper weekend of social events this coming weekend with our trip to Barnsdale Gardens, near Oakham, tomorrow, 17th May, and then our trip to Thornby Hall’s Open Day, Naseby Road, Northampton, on Saturday, 18th May.

Hope to see you soon at one of these events.

Trip to Barnsdale Gardens on Friday, 17th May 2019.

Just a reminder that is our trip to the delightful Barnsdale Gardens near Oakham this Friday.   There are 38 individual gardens to see so hopefully we will collect lots of inspiring ideas for our own gardens.   We will be doing a self-guided tour so you can go at your own pace!  Their popular tea rooms are open for light lunches or snacks throughout the day.   Most people spend an average of 3 hours there.

Entrance fee is £9.50 per person – pay on arrival.   It is about a 40 minute drive, so car sharing is encouraged.   We will be meeting at 11.30 am just near the entrance kiosk.

If you have any queries about the trip, then e-mail Tricia at:

triciablake@msn.com

We still require further tips for our booklet on reducing plastic, so don’t forget to bring along your ideas on Wednesday or send to our special e-mail account: reduceplasticMHWI@gmail.com.  We already have an offer to produce and print this booklet free of charge, which is amazing!

Finally, looking ahead to our May meeting, we will be having a plant sale, so if you have any spare seeds or plants, you can bring them along then.
