Last week a group of members of the Market Harborough WI went on a trip to London to visit the Houses of Parliament at the invitation of our local MP, Neil O’Brien.
The day started with refreshments and a tour around the Palace of Westminster with our guide who was very knowledgeable about the history of the place. The tour included the chambers as well as Westminster Hall where Queen Elizabeth II had lain in state. We watched the procession of the speaker into the commons and the maze being carried by the Serjeant at Arms as a symbol of his authority.
Neil O’Brien spent time with us in one of the committee rooms talking about his role as an MP, as the shadow MP for policy development and most importantly about his priorities representing his constituents.
Finally we went to the public gallery to listen to a debate about housing in the commons and a few of us moved on to ‘The Other Place’ – i.e. the House of Lords – to catch some of the debate about the defense investment plan. It was great watching politics in action!
Thank you to Neil O’Brien and his team for inviting us and looking after us so well – it was a very informative and fun day out!
