Find out more about Canine Partners!

This month Jane Bennett from Canine Partners and her canine partnet Frankie cam to talk to us about the work of the charity that trains up dogs to help people with physical disabiities in everyday tasks and by providing psychological support. The two of them showed off some of Frankie’s amazing skills – what a team!

Canine Partners have over 300 active partnerships working across the UK today and have created more than 1000 since they were founded in 1990. The charity relies on donations to fund the creation of its life-transforming partnerships, they would not be able to continue their work without the wonderful support of their donors and supporters.

In the words of another one of their partners, James: “I used to be worried about every day before it would even arrive. Now I know whatever comes, Meg and I will deal with it together.”

What a Bunch!

The MHWI Craft Club had a lovely time this month learning to make paper roses.

Our members Maggie and Leslie had prepared the materials – cut paper, glue, tape and wire stems – and took us step by step through the process, which is not as complicated as it looks as long as one remembers where the ‘cut side’ is…

The results speak for themselves! Thank you Maggie and Leslie for a fun evening!

Give a Helping Hand

This month we had Stella Renwick come and talk to our members about Home Start South Leicestershire.

The Home Start charity was founded in Leicester by Margaret Harrison over 50 years ago. Margaret believed that if parents were supporting struggling parents on a one-on-one basis in their home then they would be better equipped to learn to cope with the many difficulties life can bring and will be able to give their children the best possible start to their own lives.

Since then, Home Start has spread to over 22 countries in 5 continents and continues to grow. Each Home Start group works and is funded as a stand-alone charity, but they all share the same approach and common goals.

Home Start South Leicestershire is based in Market Harborough on Coventry Road, where Stella and her team of volunteers run a range of support groups and organise the home visit assistance that is at the core of the charity’s work.

Home Start South Leicestershire is to a large extend funded through donations – not just in form of money, but also through donations of time and other resources. Some of you may remember the Market Harborough Crochet Christmas Tree that many of our members contributed to (see https://marketharboroughwi.org.uk/2021/06/06/come-and-join-the-harborough-crochet-christmas-tree-project/ ). After the Christmas Tree was taken down, the granny squares were fashioned into blankets that were donated to Home Start for distribution to families.

Similarly, our member Leslie is organising ongoing donations of baby and toddler hats, jackets, booties, gloves and blankets for Home Start – please get in touch if you have some time to spare to do some knitting or crochet for the charity or indeed would like to volunteer at Home Start.

You can read more about Home Start South Leicestershire on their website: https://home-startsouthleics.org.uk

MHWI Team Wins First Price!

Last week three members of the Market Harborough WI took part in a treasure hunt around the town organised by the Leicestershire & Rutland Federation.

There were lots of question – some more obscure than others and some quite tricky to find. The team worked together and despite a downpour and some organisational hick-ups they came in as the only team to score 100%

Here they are enjoying scones and their prize at the Three Swans after the event

Well done Ladies – we are proud of you!

Fancy a Swim?

If you ever wanted to try open water swimming (or if you are already an afficionado) why not join us at Pitsford Water for a dip on the 13th July in the afternoon?

Swim Cube, who operate the open water swimming at the site, organise supervised sessions that also include a talk about open water swimming. So the plan is to go for a swimming session (or a walk for those that rather not get their toes wet) and have a picnic afterwards. Swimmers must be confident in water but do not need to be able to swim long distances – you can just have a paddle and dip if desired.

The cost will be £ 7,- per person swimming (plus any parking charges). There will be a sign up sheet at the next monthly meeting to see how much interest there is. Or members can email marketharboroughwi@gmail.com if they would like to take part (please let us know if you would be walking or swimming…).
