Between Stairs – Life as a Ladies Maid

At the Market Harborough WI Monthly Meeting last week Jo Golby – suitably dressed for the part – entertained our members with a talk about the life and tribulations of the typical Ladies Maid at the turn of the century.

Jo has spent years as a guide at both Warwick Castle and Calke Abbey and has contributed a lot of her knowledge as background to the makers of Downton Abbey. Jo’s talk this week used the career of the American heiress Mary Leiter and her struggle to be accepted into English Society after her engagement to Lord Curzon of Kedleston to show the challenges for both ladies and her maids in Edwardian society.

Mary was a good friend of Daisy Greville, Countess of Warwick (famously the mistress of Edward, Prince of Wales) who helped her find her unique style and place in society – from finding the right dress maker to hiring (and keeping!) a suitable ladies maid.

Jo’s talk covered a variety of aspects of the life of ladies maids, who were the confidants of their ladies, were expected to work incredibly long hours and attend to their mistress’s every demand. Ladies could be required to change dress up to six times a day and required their maids to look after their dress collection and mend as needed. Maids also had to be proficient in making the typical remedies of the day for chafing corsets and a beautiful skin. And last but not least, Ladies maids were expected to keep their ladies’s secrets. One of Daisy Warwick’s challenges in life was that she wore out her maids, who then left with the knowledge of the true insider…

In return for their skills and loyalty ladies maids had a higher status than the rest of the ‘downstairs’ staff, were well paid and got to travel with their ladies. They were also given the (sometimes very valuable) cast offs to keep which added to their income. At the end of their working life they often were pensioned off with a living found on the estate.

Finally, Jo gave a demonstration of the ‘language of the fan’ – an essential for both ladies (and their maids!) and gentlemen (and their footmen!) to master. Who would have known that the change of a finger position could land you an assignation!!

Altogether, this was an enjoyable evening, great fun and very informative. And none of us is likely to look at Downton Abbey in the same way ever again!

There is a theme here…

In October the Market Harborough WI Craft Club got their fingers sticky (literally!) during an evening of cup cake decorating. Our own Fiona provided all the materials (including trays of home baked cup cakes!) and guided the group through the process with some fabulous results!

And the MHWI Social Event this months took place at Paint Pottle at the Eco Village where the spirit of Halloween also crept into some of the lovely pieces the group created.

There is something about this time of year that brings out the creative side of our members!

Meet your new committee!

The Market Harborough WI held their AGM at the September monthly meeting last week.

The AGM offers the opportunity for the President and Treasurer to deliver their annual report to the members on behalf of the committee and discuss any plans they have for the development of the WI Group going forward.

The AGM is also the time to elect new committee members to replace those that are stepping down and to confirm the remaining committee in post. This year the role of Secretary was open for election as Fiona Tomlin has decided to take a step back after three years. In her place Hilary Bufton has been elected and will take on the role as of 25th September. Congratulation Hilary on your election and a big Thank You to Fiona for her dedicated service to our WI.

Meet your committee (from left): Michelle (Treasurer), Mary, Bridget (President), Hilary (Secretary), Fiona, Lynn, Susan, Di and Diane. Carolyn, Jane and Julie were unfortunately unable to attend the photo shoot, but you’ll meet them at the next event for sure!

The remaining committee members were unanimously confirmed in post.

A View from Above…

Not quite an astronaut’s journey, but at the last Market Harborough WI meeting our members were certainly treated to a new perspective – both of the room and of our home town.

Drone photographer Terry Eato and his colleague Andy talked drones – what they are, how to fly them, the rules that apply – and gave a demonstration flying one around the room!

Terry and Andy gave a very entertaining talk about their exploits – from the fun of experiencing the world from a totally different angle to the story of a drone getting lost on the roof of a high-rise block of flats where it had to be rescued from a ventilation duct. As one of our members said: It was great fun to listen to them ‘droning on’!

The two of them had also taken some spectatuclar photos of Market Harborough and of the Church Hall in Fairfield Road to show us.Terry has a page on Facebook – have a look if you would like to follow them!

So – if you are not a member yet, you now know where we are every 4th Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm! Why not come and join us to see if you would like to be part of the group?

Reminder: MHWI Monthly Meeting next Wednesday!

This month get ready to learn about drone photography. Terry Eato will show us drone footage from around Market Harborough that he has recorded and also demonstrate how to fly one of these ‘eyes in the sky’ .

The meeting starts at the usual time of 7.30pm at the Church Hall in Fairfield Road. Hope to see you there!
