WALKING CLUB – 3RD JUNE 2018

There’s still time to sign up for the first meeting of our new Walking Club which will now take place on:

Sunday, 3rd June 2018 at 10 am

Meet at The Commons Car Park, Market Harborough.

Contact Roseanne on e-mail to put your name down:  oxendon12@gmail.com

We will be walking up to Union Wharf in Market Harborough and along the tow path, which is looking really lovely at this time of year.  The walk should take between 1hr 15mins to 1hr 30mins approximately.   Afterwards we will be relaxing, having a coffee and a chat.   It’s a great opportunity to get fit while sharing some time with friends.

Do try and come along and support Roseanne and Fiona with this new venture, which many of you asked for on the recent survey.  It’s your chance to put forward  ideas about future walks – locations, days, times, length, etc.

MEDICAL DETECTION DOGS

We had a really fascinating talk last Wednesday, 23rd May 2018, from Matthew Kefford, who works for the charity ‘Medical Detection Dogs’.

Medical Detection Dogs - Matthew Kefford

This charity has been established since 2008 and is based at Great Horwood (Milton Keynes).   It is run entirely by volunteers and receives no funding from government, in spite of preventing many costly paramedic call outs and hospital admissions.

There are two main types of dog:

Medical Detection Dogs - Black dog1.   Medical Alert Assistance Dogs who support people with complex health conditions, primarily Type 1 diabetes, but also conditions such as nut allergies, seizures.

The dogs use their amazing sense of smell to detect minute odour changes emitted prior to an emergency episode and alert the person to take their medication before they collapse.

This can transform patients’ lives, enabling them to feel more confident and independent.

Medical Detection Dogs - Cancer detection dog2.   Bio Detection Dogs are trained to detect minute odours associated with many cancers and other diseases at a very early stage.    These dogs screen research samples from patients at the centre – they never ‘indicate’ on a person.  It is hoped these dogs could help scientists and medics develop faster, cheaper, non-invasive methods of diagnosis.

We were all astounded at the amazing work these dogs do.   If you would like to know more or are interested in helping support the work of this charity, they can be contacted as follows.

DAY OUT AT EMMA BRIDGEWATER FACTORY

A coach full of members from Market Harborough WI set off early on Friday morning, 18th May 2018 to visit the Emma Bridgewater Pottery Factory in Stoke-on-Trent.

On arrival, we were taken on a very  interesting tour of this friendly and homely Victorian factory.  We were introduced to various traditional crafts people, such as the jiggers, the jolliers, the fettlers, the casters and the decorators as they transformed lumps of clay into the lovely designs that we have come to recognise as the hallmark of  Emma Bridgewater.
