An Allotment with a View

July has been a great month at the allotment as all that digging and sowing and planting is starting to bear fruit. Literally in the case of the raspberry bushes from which we have so far harvested more than 3 Kilos of delicious berries. Elsewhere on the plot the tomatoes are ripening, courgettes and aubergines are looking promising as do the cucumbers, squashes, onions, potatoes and sweetcorn. The only department that is lagging behind this year are the runner beans which for some reason are trying to impersonate their bush cousins…

The abandoned wilderness that used to be our neighbour behind the green house has seen a  dramatic change in the less than 12 months that we have been working on it. Here are some ‘before and after’ photos by way of illustration:

While the original plot is now a proper production garden, the upper part is more about flowers and a nice place to sit, rest and admire. True to our ‘make do, mend, recycle and up-cycle’ approach, the structures are made from recycled or reclaimed materials, the plants have been grown from seed and the garden furniture set as well as the arch have been donated.

As someone once said: If you are trying to climb Mount Everest it is a good idea to look back down the mountain from time to time to see how far you have come. The view from the bench at the top of the plot is definitely worth enjoying – why not come round sometime and try it? As long as it is dry weather we are there every Monday.

It is all happening at the WI!

It seems that the easing of the lock-down measures has also opened up the diary and we are now getting very busy at the Market Harborough WI!

The Book Club is joining forces with the Leicester Ladies WI. They found that their book choices seemed to magically align and decided to hold their virtual book club meetings together come August.

By observing social distancing and group number rules the Walking Club had their first outing since lock-down with a walk to Lubenham finishing off with a well deserved tea and scone in the garden of the farm shop.

To make up for all those cancelled monthly meetings the committee organised a Bingo Night via Zoom. After distributing cards via email, 20 Members had their dobbers at the ready and their eyes down for a fun evening. We played for an hour and even discovered some new Bingo calls. Thank you to Caroline, our caller, and to the six winners of the prizes, which will be dropped on their door steps this week.

We are now looking forward to a busy August too:

The Virtual Craft Club is now on Zoom!

Some of the MHWI Craft Club members have given Zoom a trial run this week to see how going the digital route could be used to facilitate members catching up, sharing crafting ideas and showing off completed projects. And we are pleased to announce that the Virtual Craft Club will now meet via Zoom at the usual monthly slot of the first Thursday of each Month!

Last Thursday was an opportunity to have a ‘knit and natter’, catch up and have a look at the crafting projects everyone was working on. Everyone has been busy filling their lock-down time honing existing skills or trying out new ideas. Here is a selection of completed projects we discussed:

Craft Club Group

The crafts involved range from sewing (dog bandana and apron), to crochet (the dog and rabbit toys) to paper craft (the paper animals used to illustrate a bed time story and the rainbow wreath). And we all decided to give the Flower Hammering a try, where flowers are placed between fabric and ‘hammered’ until a print is achieved.  Can’t wait!

The next Virtual Craft Club meeting will be on Thursday, 6th August at 7pm. If you are a member of  the Market Harborough WI and would like to take part, please email marketharboroughwi@gmail.com to get on the distribution list for the Zoom meeting access details. And if you are not a member yet – may be think about joining the WI? We always welcome new members!

All Systems Go at the Allotment!

Well – what a month is has been since our last post!

Not only have all the frost victims been replaced, but they have been complemented with the next round of planting – anything from squash to sweet corn, from brassicas to peppers. And with the perfect mix of sunshine and rain it is all growing at breakneck speed.

The Gardening Girls are now all back from their various stages of isolation and we even had some visitors and a new member of the team, who made her mark in spectacular fashion by organising (and installing!) a new roof for our shed, which was in serious danger of coming down in bits after the various winter storms. See below the result: Straight roof, proper guttering, door realigned, gaps filled – nothing wasted, all materials donated, so one could call it a 5* up-cycling job!

Elsewhere the planting around the pond has been finished and the cool waters have been discovered by three frogs who seem to have settled in happily. Hopefully they’ll stay around. And the project to take the old well back into operation is well underway (no pun intended) with a pallet arch, carbine hooks, rope and bucket. We’ll need to fine tune the water lifting a bit, but soon we won’t have to walk all the way to the road to get water for the upper part of the plot.

And just when we thought it could not get any better we received a generous donation of proper garden furniture, that will fit perfectly on the upper terrace even with social distancing rules applied. So we are moving closer to having the odd ‘sit down natter’ again – even if we have to bring our own tea for a while yet.

If you fancy having a look – do come down to visit and have a look around. Weather permitting we are there every Monday from 10am until we run out of steam sometime in the afternoon.

Wonder what next month will bring…

June Virtual Craft Club – Plastic Free Food Wrapping

This month’s subject on the virtual craft club program was chosen in the context of the WI Campaigns around the reduced use of plastic (https://www.thewi.org.uk/campaigns). Most of us use all manner of single use plastic materials on a daily basis – from clingfilm to straws to food trays. Reducing them even on a small scale can make a big difference in the long-term.

Beeswax Food Wraps

The idea is to make re-useable food wraps that can replace the use of clingfilm and other single use plastics. Read more about it by clicking here or google the subject – there are plenty of reading resources available online.

Make Your Own Wraps

Here are some videos to help you along the way in making your own food wraps. Size and design are entirely down to your own requirements and taste, so have some fun using up odd scaps of fabric that may be floating around your craft drawer! Since non-essential shops are due to open again in the near future it hopefully won’t be too difficult to stock up on the ingredients, but otherwise they are readily available online.
