Gallones was great

Image

Gallones, July 16-w500-h500Twenty two members thoroughly enjoyed their visit to Gallones in Adam & Eve Street last night.  We enjoyed a short talk on the history of the company which dates back to 1895, through to its recent, successful venture into franchising, of which the Market Harborough parlour was its pilot.

We found out about how ice cream is made and the amazing range of flavours, before getting to try some.  The salted caramel, their most popular flavour, was delicious.

Canary Girls sings!

The Mikron Theatre team: Claire Burns, Stephanie Hackett, Matt Jopling and James McLean

Yes, Canary Girls was another hit by this year’s Mikron Theatre team: Claire Burns, Stephanie Hackett, Matt Jopling, James McLean.  They sang, played a variety of musical instruments and nimbly managed costume changes to perform the story of sisters, Rose and Liz, who instantly gave up their jobs as maids at the outbreak of World War One to take on board new challenges.  These took them to a local bomb making factory, where conditions were harsh, leading to one sister stepping out of her comfort zone to take up the challenge of seeking a safer work place and the other (whose skin turned yellow from the chemicals) to earn more money, intending to save and move to France to be part of the war on the front line.  Interwoven with this were the characters of midlady Millicent, her son Francis and the factory owner.

Many thanks to Fiona Thompson for organising this successful event, and to the rest of the team from Market Harborough WI who supported her.  Visitors from 20 other WIs attended the evening.

The performance was held in the pleasant surroundings of the Evangelical Church in Bath Street, Market Harborough.  Market Harborough WI members baked a wide variety of delicious cakes for visitors to sample.
