Frances Quinn’s fascinating story of the Bake Off

Frances Quinn t (4)-w500-h500Frances Quinn, Market Harborough’s 2013 Bake Off winner, gave WI members a fascinating insight into how she took up baking through to being selected for and taking part in the Bake Off.

It took a year to get from completing the entry (colleagues at Joules kept leaving entry forms on her desk) to becoming overall winner.   The selection process included phone interviews, 2 trips to London, one carrying sample cakes on the train, cooking for Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry and screenshot before getting that long awaited phone call.

Frances humorously took us through the weekly filming process.  Again, very demanding, travelling to Bristol each Friday night and being in the Bake Off tent for filming for up to 12 hours a day.  Then back to a full time job and fitting in practice baking each evening.  Her weekly fridge was often full of 2 kg of butter and cream for ganache!

Frances concluded her talk by demonstrating orange blossom almond paste, using thisFrances Quinn t (3)-w500-h500 to make decorated mice (see picture opposite).

Her book Quinntessential Cooking is being published in late August 2015.

Frances’ talk was part of the Welland WI Group annual meeting, ably organised this year by Great Bowden WI.  Well done, too, to the Great Bowden WI choir who entertained us with several songs.

Annabel enjoys Denman College raffle prize

Annabel Smith, Committee Member, had a super surprise at the Christmas raffle: a ticket for a course at the WI’s well known Denman College.  Annabel was delighted to report at the February meeting that she had attended the Willow Sculpture course with a friend.  They had 7 items using willow, including a wigwam and bird feeder.  The latter she kindly donated to the evening’s raffle.  Annabel said, ‘ It was brilliant.  Denman is great.’

Once in a lifetime – WI Centenary Garden Party

WI Centenary logo eeD5k3OX_400x400As part of the Centenary year, Buckingham Palace is hosting a garden party, led by the Duchess of Cornwall.  Each WI in the country has a ticket for a member.  If you wish to put your name down for the Market Harborough WI ballot to be our representative at this once in a lifetime.  There is help with the costs and transport is from WI house in Leicester.

A list was passed round at February’s meeting but if you missed this, then quickly get in touch with us: Contact Us or call 07547 890 756.

Diary date Saturday 7 March 2015

How about going along to the Leicestershire and Rutland Federation of WI’s Annual Meeting at the Grammar School, Great Glen?  Speakers include Angela Rippon, reported to be ‘excellent’.  Tickets £10 and opportunities for lift sharing.

Market Harborough WI member Vicky (not committee member Vicky) is entering the cooking competition.  Gemma Underwood’s embroidered Centenary brick will also be on display.  There will be activities, too, for visitors to join in.  Contact a Committee Member at the February meeting to buy your ticket.

International WIs – do you have a contact?

WI Centenary logo eeD5k3OX_400x400Let’s get networking with some WIs across the world in this Centenary year.  Do you have a friend or family member who is in the WI or its equivalent (sometimes called Women’s Rural Institutes or Country Women’s Association) that would like to be in touch with Market Harborough WI?  If so, maybe send them an email now, or use social media, and let a Committee Member know how you get on.  We will need the contact details, too.  Am sure we can make excellent use of our website/blog, Facebook, email and Twitter to make this idea happen.

Centenary evening out to see ‘Raising Agents’

Poster for Raising Agents-w500-h500

Friday 22nd May at 7.30pm. Congregational Hall, Bowden Lane, Market Harborough, LE16 7JD – buy your ticket now!

We are delighted to announce that the Mikron Touring Theatre will be in Market Harborough in May with their specially written play to celebrate 100 years’ of WI.

Bunnington WI is a bit down-at-heel. Dwindling membership means they can barely afford the hall, let alone a decent speaker. So when a PR guru becomes a member, the women are glad of new blood. Initially.

The milk of WI kindness begins to sour when she re-brands them the Bunnington Bunnies. They’re hopping. With stakes higher than a five tiered cake stand, a battle ensues for the very soul of Bunnington, perhaps the WI itself!

On the threshold of one century into the next, this tale of hobbyists and lobbyists asks how much we should know our past or how much we should let go of it.

Above all else, like the WI itself, Raising Agents is a story of friendship.
