Invitation to World of Fashion event
An invitation from Sheeda’s Beauty Clinic who generously sponsored our Christmas raffle:
Hello! As you probably already know Sheeda’s Beauty Clinic hold a Charity Fashion Show in
aid of The Eve Appeal (Gynaecological Cancer Research) every year. That time has come round again and we would be ever so grateful if you could support us.
Donate a skill for our spring raffle
The WI Centenary year is just the time for members to share their many and varied skills. This could be a skill such as knitting, crocheting, DIY, gardening, hairdressing, nails, baking a cake or babysitting, the list is endless. You need to give 2 hours and the venue can be wherever you wish. You could even make it a social evening by sharing a bottle of wine while you help several members learn a new skill.
It’s not too late to donate your skill, so please Contact Us, call 07547 890 756 or speak to a Committee member. It would be great to have enough skills so that every member wins something in the raffle!
Knitting a yellow brick road, tea and tents and yarn bomb – up date
Yes, some new terms here but things will be much clearer at the March monthly meeting. It’s all to do with the Tea and Tents WI camping weekend this summer. Clare and Fiona were straight there on the web when the tickets were released and will be representing Market Harborough again this year.
A Yellow Brick Road is to be knitted (as part of their yarn bomb) to go around the grounds. This complements the Wizard of Oz theme for the weekend.
Frances Quinn’s fascinating story of the Bake Off
Frances Quinn, Market Harborough’s 2013 Bake Off winner, gave WI members a fascinating insight into how she took up baking through to being selected for and taking part in the Bake Off.
It took a year to get from completing the entry (colleagues at Joules kept leaving entry forms on her desk) to becoming overall winner. The selection process included phone interviews, 2 trips to London, one carrying sample cakes on the train, cooking for Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry and screenshot before getting that long awaited phone call.
Frances humorously took us through the weekly filming process. Again, very demanding, travelling to Bristol each Friday night and being in the Bake Off tent for filming for up to 12 hours a day. Then back to a full time job and fitting in practice baking each evening. Her weekly fridge was often full of 2 kg of butter and cream for ganache!
Frances concluded her talk by demonstrating orange blossom almond paste, using this
to make decorated mice (see picture opposite).
Her book Quinntessential Cooking is being published in late August 2015.
Frances’ talk was part of the Welland WI Group annual meeting, ably organised this year by Great Bowden WI. Well done, too, to the Great Bowden WI choir who entertained us with several songs.
Social planning evening – Market Harborough WI float at the 2015 Carnival
To celebrate 100 years of WI, we are going to have a float at the Market Harborough Carnival on Saturday 13 June 2015. If you would like to help with planning, as well as being on the MHWI float, then come along to a fun, social evening at the Roebuck, Rockingham Road, 7.30 pm Tuesday 10 March.
Gemma Jaysart has lots of ideas and will be joining the planning group.
If for any reason you can’t make the 10th, then let Clare Farquahar, President have your name. You can also Contact Us or call 07547 890 756.
Can you help with the Great Daffodil Appeal this month?
My name is Carrie and I am the Leicestershire Community Fundraiser for Marie Curie Cancer Care. I am generating support from local community groups for our Great Daffodil Appeal collection that takes place this March.
Marie Curie Cancer Care is appealing for people in Leicestershire to donate their time this March to collect for the charity’s annual Great Daffodil Appeal. The appeal is Marie Curie’s biggest fundraiser, which encourages everyone to give a donation and wear a daffodil pin in March.
Marie Curie Nurses give free hands-on care to people with terminal illnesses in their own homes and vital emotional support to their loved ones. We allow families to make the most of the precious time they have left together. Given the choice, most of us would want to die at home, surrounded by the people and things we cherish. Marie Curie Cancer Care makes this possible. But the sad fact is, every five minutes someone in the UK dies without the care they need at the end of their life. That’s why w urgently need to reach more people.
The money raised in Leicestershire will help local Leicestershire patients and enable Marie Curie Nurses to provide more free care to local people with terminal illnesses in their own homes.
If you think that your Women’s Institute would like to be part of the collection this year, then I would love to hear from you.
Kindest regards

Annabel enjoys Denman College raffle prize
Annabel Smith, Committee Member, had a super surprise at the Christmas raffle: a ticket for a course at the WI’s well known Denman College. Annabel was delighted to report at the February meeting that she had attended the Willow Sculpture course with a friend. They had 7 items using willow, including a wigwam and bird feeder. The latter she kindly donated to the evening’s raffle. Annabel said, ‘ It was brilliant. Denman is great.’
