WI Life – MHWI member feature, p29
Last September I answered the request from WI Life to know what members did in retirement. An automatic email said thank you but they had been inundated with replies. Out of the blue this June time, I received an email asking if I was still interested and would I like to do a phone interview and photo shoot. Here is the outcome on page 29! Helen
Just Junk Food – a fascinating project
Members eagerly sampled a variety of foods made from unwanted food items, prepared by the team of volunteers at The Real Junk Food Project based in St Andrews Road, off Hinckley Road, Leicester.
Alison and Bobby, supported by volunteer Director Ash, began theIr talk with a poem about food waste and then went on to give us some startling figures: 20% of food is wasted in households, costing approximately £60, 5.8 million people in the U.K are in food poverty and 15 million tonnes of food are wasted each year.
With those thought provoking figures in mind, Bobby and Alison talked passionately about their rationale for setting up their project, how they obtain food donations regularly from a local, well known supermarket, wholesale fruit and veg market and international food shops. The menu in their ‘pay as you feel’ cafe depends entirely on donated ingredients and recipes are agreed during daily banter in the kitchen. Dried fish from Africa proved an unusual challenge but results in a very tasty fish stew. Alison described some of the social outcomes of the project, including meeting with others at the cafe when coming to eat, volunteering and offering skills, such as the painted van in the picture. Nothing is wasted, even plastic plates and cutlery are washed and used again and vegetable peelings are composted.
Remember to book for Hairspray
Bring your cheque book or cash tonight to reserve your seats for Hairspray at 7.30pm on Wednesday, 18th October, at The Curve in Leicester, our social event for that month.
The seats are on row B6-17 of the Circle and are priced at £30.00 each, or £27.50 if over 60.
Monthly meeting this evening
Ash from the Real Junk Food Project will be talking about Cafe Culture with Junk Food: how supermarket waste food is turned into profits as their pay-as-you-feel cafe. Sample some delicious food, too.
See you at 7.30 pm in the Congregational Church, Bowden Lane.

Items for jewllery valuation
Do you have a piece of jewellery you would like valuing? If so, then a speaker from Thornton’s Jewellery will be giving a talk at our October meeting. A number of items, selected randomly from those put forward by MHWI members, will be valued.
If you are interested in having an item valued, then let a Committee Member know at this week’s monthly meeting.
Hiring now! Join us at the Committee meeting this evening
Would you like to be a Committee member but are not too sure what it’s all about? Or, maybe if you can’t commit to being on the Committee all year you could help out with specific events? If so, do come along to our Committee meeting this evening at 7.30 pm at The Roebuck on Rockingham Road, Market Harborough (behind the Tesco garage). Come along and spend a relaxed evenings with fellow MHWI members.
There are various roles to fill from our September annual meeting: President and Vice President (without which MHWI cannot continue), as well as help with the Secretary’s role, Website/Social Media and Refreshments.
Your ideas on learning cooking skills
For the website perhaps.
Best wishes

Please pass onto your members for their feedback direct to Emily at NWFI.
Many thanks.

On behalf of the NFWI Food and Garden Committee, I am writing to request your feedback about different learning approaches when it comes to helping members developing their baking, cookery and preserving skills.
Towards the end of this month we will be asking members the following question on social media to try and find out which learning methods have the greatest appeal and relevance:
Which form of learning would most appeal to you for improving your baking, cooking and preserving skills?
1) Practical courses at Denman
2) Practical workshops in your local area
3) Distance learning online course (work at home in your own time)
4) Certificate course in your local area which involves home study, practical sessions and producing coursework
5) Demonstration videos
Or any other suggestions?
We would be very keen to hear back from federations about what would be practical and preferable from your perspective.
The NFWI Food and Garden Committee remains committed to offering fair and inclusive opportunities to all federations to encourage and support the practical development and application of cookery skills. It has been agreed that future educational opportunities or initiatives created by the Food and Garden Committee will need to be member-led in order to ensure significant nationwide take-up.
As not all members use social media, we would be grateful if you could you kindly pass on this information to your WIs, and ask that any feedback is passed back to me, either by email or letter to the below address, by Monday 25 September 2017.
Please could you copy this email to your relevant sub-committee chairs.
Kind regards,
Emily Breeds
