Owls to behold – it certainly was!

Tony Hewitt and his collection of rescued owls certainly held members’ attention last night.

Tony certainly knows all there is to know about these beautiful birds that come in different colours and sizes: food preferences, preying on other creatures, doing makeovers on other birds’ nests and lifespans of 25 to 45+ years.  His talks help Tony raise money to feed and keep the 20+ owls.  To find out more check out his website Owls to Behold

Last question – what’s the name of a group if owls?  Tip: Westminster

Things to remember for tonight’s meeting

books-w500-h500

This year is already proving to be living up to our President’s strap line, ‘Bigger and Bolder‘!  So here are a few reminders:

  • Bring a favourite book you would like to donate to tonight’s monthly raffle?  It’s simple: donate a book (it must be in excellent condition) and you will receive a numbered raffle ticket.  At the end of the evening you will pick up a new title with a corresponding number.
  • Pick up that pile of unwanted bras and new pants for our Smalls for Africa collection.
  • Put unwanted jewellery items in a bag and put them in our collection for Treasure that Heart.
  • Have you paid your sub for 2016?  If not, this is the very last month, so bring your cheque book or some cash.  You can also do a bank transfer.

Needed – unwanted bras and new pants!

bra and pantsClearing out your winter wardrobe?  Come across bras that didn’t fit or you just don’t like.   Then we have a use for them!  They can be teen bras or nursing bras, too.

We also need new pants.  Next time you buy some, pick up a spare pack, too. These can be for children aged 3 to 15 years or womens’, sizes 8 to 16.

Bring them along to a monthly meeting in February, March or April.  We’re collecting for Smalls for Africa.  We’ll be sending off our collection after the April meeting.  You can also speak to Vicky Watts at the next monthly meeting or email: marketharboroughwi@gmail.com

Make sure you put this date in your diaries.  The fabulous touring Mikron Theatre will be here again at 7.30 pm in the Congregational Church, Bowden Lane with their new show Canary Girls.  If it’s as good as Raising Agents last year, it will be brilliant.

Details of how to buy your tickets will be available soon.

Night out at the ballet to see Giselle

Giselle-w500-h500Are you free on Wednesday 6 April?  Several members of the MHWI committee will be going to see this evening broadcast at the Savoy Cinema, Corby.  We thought it would be a natural follow on from the March monthly meeting on The Royal Opera House where Annabel Smith’s daughter will be coming up from London to give members a peek behind the scenes to find out more about the design and production of the costumes and scenery.

If you would like to meet up before the performance at the Savoy then go ahead and book your tickets.  Just let Clare, Carmen or Annabel know before the 6th April so they can look out for your group.

£500 donated by MHWI to new local volunteer project

We are delighted to announce that £500 raised from our highly successful film evening last November and our Christmas raffle (so generously supported by a whole host of local businesses) resulted in a cheque being present to VASL (Voluntary Action South Leicestershire).

Diane Claridge (1)-w500-h500The money is to go to a new project, called Community Champions, where volunteers not only befriend local people but also work with them to support them to take part in community activities, leaving a sustainable outcome for all concerned.   Diane Claridge, MHWI member, and employee of VASL accepted the cheque.

If you would like to know more about volunteering for the Community Champions project or about other volunteering opportunities in the areas, go to VASL’s website for more information and contact details.  You could also speak to Diane at the next monthly meeting.
