Would you like to have a go at Indoor Kurling?  There is a taster session on Thursday afternoon, 1 October in Leicester at The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Leisure Centre. If you would like to join a small group from Market Harborough then speak to Fiona Thompson at the July monthly meeting or email marketharboroughwi@gmail.com.  Bookings have to be in by Thursday 20 August 2015.  Full details: Indoor Kurling – 1 October 15

Volunteers for monthly programme or social events

Would you like to help organise one of our monthly programme meetings for 2016?    You don’t have to be on the committee, just willing to contact the speaker (we have lots of ideas and contacts, thanks to all your suggestions), meet the host on the night, make sure they have everything they need and give a thank you at the end.

Or, maybe you have an idea for a one off social event?  Perhaps there is somewhere you would like to go with a group of MHWI members or a special speaker you would like to invite for a one off activity night?  If you would like to make this happen and are willing to organise the event, we’d love to hear from you.  Speak to a member of the committee at the next monthly meeting or drop us an email: marketharboroughwi@gmail.com

Blinking fabulous herbal medicine evening!

We picked, boiled, poured, stirred, sieved, squeezed, mashed, combined, chopped, layered, sprinkled mixed, tasted, smoothed, sniffed, listened, learned, asked, laughed and enjoyed.

julia_thompson-w500-h500A fantastic, informative and humorous, interactive demonstration was given by Julia Thompson of Archway House to an enthusiastic MHWI social group this evening. Julia crammed in a variety of freshly made herbal concoctions in an action packed two hours whilst sharing her wide knowledge and passion for the medical and almost magical powers of our native flowers, herbs, leaves, fruits and seeds.

I’m sure that we’ll all enjoy the delights of our elderflower  syrup; oatmeal, almond, avocado and calendula scrub; healing cocoa butter balm and herby bath bags. Who knows what the WI ladies will be using their jam jars for next…

Blinking fabulous evening!  Thanks, Julia.

Crafters – can you help make a banner?

WI Centenary logo eeD5k3OX_400x400Having just had a meeting with our President, it has been decided to try and get a MHWI Banner together for the Carnival.
So all you budding people who want to have a go at the above ,we will be holding a meeting on Thursday 21st may at 7.30pm at the Roebuck.
Clare will go though the design and we are hoping that we can get different people or groups to be able to do parts of the banner.
If you can come on Thursday, can you let us know please?  email: marketharboroughwi@gmail.com or call 07547 890 756.

Gin tour – great fun

gin tour 5 (1)-w500-h500 gin tour 5 (2)-w500-h500What an amazing evening at Warner Edwards Gin Distillery. 17 of us went along to learn about how gin is made and how the distillery came to be set up in Harrington.
Warner Edwards Gin exists as the result of 2 friends at university with the ambition and vision of creating a “distinctive, artisan spirit.”
The evening started with a short walk to see where the natural springs are on their farmland. Their gins made from this natural spring water, grain spirit, homegrown elderflower an 10 secret botanicals – all of which are a closely guarded secret.
We then went to the distillery, which is in a converted barn on the farm and heard in detail about the start of the business and distillation process. The first batch was produced in November 2012 and since then, they have gone from strength to strength, winning several awards, the most recent being a “Double Gold” at San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
Besides the original Dry Gin, they have since introduced Elderflower Gin, Sloe Gin and most recently Rhubarb Gin.
It was a really interesting and enjoyable evening, with us being able to sample all the different gins – definitely worth going for!
Many thanks to Warner Edwards for letting us visit. (Valerie Hitchcox)

Jamtastic! Your help is needed, too

carnival apr 15-w500-h500Our first carnival craft night was “jamtastic”!  Not the traditional WI jam making technique, but the wallpaper paste gave just the right consistency!!

Annabel and Gemma had great fun experimenting to get just the right colours.  We have damson, raspberry and apricot (which has some lumps in  it which looks very authentic!).

Victoria, Janice and Linda snipped and fixed the lids.  Thanks to Linda for supplying such lovely fabric.

Patsy and I have been looking through our list of needs and ladies that would like to join in the carnival fun.  Our next craft night will be cake making.  We need bath and car sponges,  blocks of polystyrene, sheets of foam, anything we can shape and turn into a variety of gateaux!!  All donations gratefully received.  If you would like to join in this evening a date will be announced at the next meeting.

We are still looking for volunteers to help us out on carnival day June 13th.  Please sign up, we are having so much fun, but we do need more people!! So please let email marketharboroughwi@gmail.com if you want to join in or have materials to donate.
