Let’s go walking!

Calling all MHWI Walkers! The Walking Group is coming out of its two year long hibernation!

The Walking Club is a group of like-minded members that enjoy a ramble and a chat. Each walk is about 3.5 miles and usually will take about 1.5 and 2 hours to complete. Walks are not difficult and tend to finish at locations where the group can have a coffe or drink and a natter to round things off.

The group have planned a programme of walks from April to October, which can be found here. All members are part of a WhatsApp group through which the route, meeting place and meeting time are confirmed a couple of days before each walk. If you would like to join the group, please email marketharboroughwi@gmail.com with your name and mobile phone number, so we can add you to the WhatsApp group. Then all you need to join in is suitable footwear, appropriate clothing and a water bottle!

Hope to see you at one of our walking meetings soon!

Have you heard of Omotenashi?

Omotenashi is the Japanese art of guest centric hospitality and an integral part of Japanese culture. It aims to create a memorable experience through flawless preparation and by looking after guests with infinite care and attention.

And members of the Market Harborough WI certainly got treated to a wonderful example of Omotenashi at their monthly meeting last night. Yuko Dixon joined us for a talk about Japanese culture and a demonstration of her cookery craft. By skillfully weaving information about Japan and the ingredients she uses into her cookery demonstration Yuko taught us about the aim to use seasonal ingredients, how school children in Japan learn about a balanced diet from an early age and how to use soy sauce as a condiment – not a sauce.

There was also a raft of useful cookery information about ingredients like sushi rice, shredded dried fish and homemade Terryaki sauce while Yuko cooked Japanese Curry (I bet you didn’t see that one coming!) and made sushi rolls.

And the final highlight of the evening: Members were invited to sample all that delicious food. It was super tasty and a great experience.

If you would like to learn more about Omotenashi Dining why not have a look at Yuko’s Website: http://www.omotenashidining.com? And if you would like to find out more about the Market Harborough WI and what we are up to send us an email at marketharboroughwi@gmail.com or visit our Facebook or Twitter pages.

Up-cycling the Craft Club Way

The Market Harborough WI Craft Club spent an enjoyable evening learning how to use odds and ends, broken jewelry and beads to create new master pieces.

One of our ‘crafty’ members organised the materials and brought a huge selection of items for the group to choose from. And as you can see, the only limitations were our imagination and the finite supply of superglue… A fun way to recycle and up-cycle unloved materials that does not require specialist tools or training.

Never nind the rain – the snowdrops were fantastic!

On Sunday some hardy MHWI members braved the weather and took part in the Snowdrop Walk in the historic village of Ashley. Tickets included a map to some of the village gardens opened to visitors for the day as well as a lovely (and warming!) cup of soup and a roll served up by volunteers in the church.

The snowdrops made a great show and at least some of us had a severe case of ‘garden envy’! Our walk ended with a hot cup of coffee from the fully stocked cake buffet back at the church. Thank you for a nice afternoon out – we’ll be back next time

Reminder: Snowdrop Walk this Sunday!

For our February Social Event we are looking to join in the Ashley Village Snowdrop Walk around this lovely village and some private gardens that are opening for the occasion. We’ll be meeting at the church at 12pm to buy our tickets and collect the maps and provisions 😉

Sign up at the WI Monthly Meeting tonight or by email to marketharboroughwi@gmail.com and see the Ashley Village website for more details about the walk and parking options
