Monthly Meeting – Wednesday 26th June 2019 – Social Evening with Food and Drink!

Glass bottoms

Change of plan for this Wednesday’s meeting.   We are not having a cookery demonstration.   As it’s our last meeting prior to the Summer break in July, we thought it would be a lovely idea to have a summer social instead.   So, we will be providing the wine and cheese, you just need to bring your plates and glasses!

Our social evenings are a great opportunity to get to know your WI colleagues a bit better and make new friends.

Please remember we do not have a monthly meeting in July.    However, there are still social events happening:

Saturday, 6th July – Ladies’ Day at Leicester Racecourse (for those of you who have booked your tickets).

E-mail Ann:   murphyann43@aol.com

Monday, 8th July – the Book Club are going out for an Italian meal at Casa Nostra, 13 Adam and Eve Street, Market Harborough.   The only topic we will be discussing is food and drink!  We would love other MHWI members to join us – just contact Valerie first so we know what size table to reserve:

E-mail Valerie:   vhitchcox50@hotmail.com

All our clubs will be running as usual during July.  Look out for individual postings about these in due course.

Next Wednesday Louise Brooks will be coming to talk to us about all the materials and methods she uses to make many different styles of hats.   Hopefully, we will come away inspired with ideas for those special occasions that pop up at this time of year when a hat might be required, such as summer weddings.   Also, don’t forget you might need a hat if you are joining us for ‘Ladies Day’ at Leicester Racecourse on 6th July!

June in bloom - purple daisy flowersIn addition, there will be a Plant Sale next Wednesday.   Plants will be provided by Fiona or from our very own allotment.   If members have any plants they wish to donate, please bring them along –  they will be very much appreciated.

Also, don’t forget we have a bumper weekend of social events this coming weekend with our trip to Barnsdale Gardens, near Oakham, tomorrow, 17th May, and then our trip to Thornby Hall’s Open Day, Naseby Road, Northampton, on Saturday, 18th May.

Hope to see you soon at one of these events.

Trip to Barnsdale Gardens on Friday, 17th May 2019.

Just a reminder that is our trip to the delightful Barnsdale Gardens near Oakham this Friday.   There are 38 individual gardens to see so hopefully we will collect lots of inspiring ideas for our own gardens.   We will be doing a self-guided tour so you can go at your own pace!  Their popular tea rooms are open for light lunches or snacks throughout the day.   Most people spend an average of 3 hours there.

Entrance fee is £9.50 per person – pay on arrival.   It is about a 40 minute drive, so car sharing is encouraged.   We will be meeting at 11.30 am just near the entrance kiosk.

If you have any queries about the trip, then e-mail Tricia at:

triciablake@msn.com

Missed out on recent events at MHWI? Catch up here ….

Love and Romance in Art was the topic for our monthly meeting on 27th February and our speaker, Grainne, led a fascinating session on exploring the details and secrets of famous paintings portraying couples.   Grainne works for a charity called ‘Magic Lantern’ which uses works of art to help children and adults observe more closely the world around them.  We certainly came away feeling that our eyes had been well and truly opened!

If you missed the session, here is a list of the paintings we explored together:

  • 1434  –  The Arnolfini PortraiTt by Jan Van Eyck (National Gallery, London)
  • 1622  –  A Marriage Portrait by Frans Hals (Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam)
  • c1767   The Swing by Jean-Honore Fragonard (The Wallace Collection, London)
  • 1853  –  The Awakening Conscience by William Holman-Hunt (Tate Gallery, London)
  • 1908  –  The Kiss by Gustav Klimt (Osterreichische Galerie Belvedere, Vienna)
as shown below, and then zoomed in on the couple.

On Wednesday, 6th March, we also had our Greek Street Food evening in the Lounge at the Congregational Church when Margarita Pap came to talk to us and demonstrate three traditional Greek dishes – a Greek Salad, Tzatziki, and Courgette and Feta fritters.    Margarita gave us many tips about choosing and preparing Greek food and we all had a chance to sample the delicious dishes she made at the end of the session.  So authentic was the taste, that we could imagine ourselves whisked back to holidays relaxing by the shores of a sun-baked Greek island….!

If you missed the session and/or want to try out these delicious recipes, they can be found on Margarita’s website here:

www.margaritastastykitchen.com

Off to try out the recipes for dinner tonight!

Our next monthly meeting is this Wednesday, 27th February when our speaker, Grainne, will be talking to us about ‘Love and Romance in Art’.    She will be showing us how to look more closely at famous paintings and explaining what the details can reveal.  Sounds intriguing!

A few other things to remember are:

  • Payment of your 2019 subs of £42 is due.
  • Payment of £28 is also due if you have put your name down to go and see ‘Menopause the Musical’ in Corby on Saturday, 15th June 2019.

Also, we will be having a sale of books and jigsaws at our March meeting.   If you have any books or jigsaws you wish to donate you can bring them along on Wednesday or in March.    Monies raised from sale of jigsaws will go to support the cost of the new greenhouse on our allotment and sale of books will go into our WI funds.

Lovely Walk from Lubenham last Sunday

The MHWI Walking Group set off last Sunday morning from Lubenham Village Hall for a bracing walk of nearly 4 miles.    The sun managed to shine a little bit and everyone returned feeling invigorated by the fresh air and lovely scenery.

An energetic start to the New Year with Scottish Dancing!

A big thank you to all our members for helping us through a very full and busy meeting last Wednesday.

First, we dealt with our subscription renewals.    If you have not paid yet, please ensure we receive payment of £42 by our next monthly meeting on 27th February at the latest (details of how to do this contained in an early post).

Secondly, we discussed and voted on the 2019 proposed resolutions (campaigns).    Votes submitted at the meeting have been forwarded to the Leicestershire and Rutland Federation.    It is your individual votes that are added together with members’ votes from WIs around the country    A shortlist of two resolutions will be produced for consideration and adoption at the National Conference of WIs in June.  All resolutions are on-going so we can still continue to work on previous ones, eg plastic reduction, for as long as we consider appropriate.

Last, but by no means least, we all enjoyed a very social and energetic session led by the lovely dancers from the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, resplendent in their Scottish kilts and dresses!  Very appropriate for forthcoming Burns night on 25th January. Fascinating bits of history were entwined with reels, Gay Gordon’s and an excellent demonstration of the Highland Fling.   With the Scottish dancers’ guidance and much patience, we all managed to join in and keep going in the right direction!
