Walk around Wistow

It was a glorious Autumn morning yesterday, with clear blue skies, as the MHWI Walking Group set off on a circular walk from the Wistow Rural Centre.

Walk 28 Oct 2018 Wistow3

We crossed through the fields towards Kilby and then passed by the Harcourt Stud where a few inquisitive horses came to say ‘hello’!

We then joined the canal towpath, following it first towards Newtown Harcourt, and then turning towards Wistow, where we enjoyed some lovely views across the canal and fields of St Wistan’s Church.

Having walked approximately 4 1/2 miles (or 12,000 steps!), we sat down to enjoy some well earned coffees and scones!.

Do come and join us on our next walk – details to be published shortly.

Amazing Pumpkins!

R Attwood - Pumpkins - Oct 2018

Russell Attwood from Kettering Pumpkins gave us an extremely enthusiastic and animated talk last Wednesday evening about his unusual form of gardening and his passion for all things ‘pumpkin’!

Inspired by a second hand book he bought on ‘Lasagna Gardening’, he has developed an easier way of managing his allotments, which he claims involves virtually:

‘No digging, no watering, no weeding’!

The process involves spreading layers of newspapers or thick cardboard over the ground to suppress weeds, and adding further layers of various organic materials, which are gradually broken down into a rich soil.

Not only did Russell show us some of the amazing designs he carves onto pumpkins, he also brought along some of his homemade pumpkin scones and flapjacks  for us to taste, with the added bonus that they contained no added sugar – the pumpkin being used for sweetness instead.
Pumpkin song - Oct 2018

A rousing sing-song of pumpkin inspired songs, based on well known tunes, brought his session to an hilarious end.

He even managed to turn England’s green and pleasant land orange!

Look carefully, I am sure you will recognise the song!

The pumpkin theme was also adopted for our raffle and some of our members entered into the spirit of the occasion too!

Walking Group news

A great time was had by all on the Walking Group’s stroll around the lovely Foxton locks last Sunday.   Fortunately, the weather was much kinder to us this month.  We also ventured up the viewing platform near the inclined plane along the way.    We stopped en route at the new tea room too for a chat and a cuppa!

AGM last Wednesday

On Wednesday, 26th September, it was our Annual General Meeting.   MHWI’s Financial Statement was presented to members for their perusal and the Annual Report of our activities for the last year was read out..  Members then had a chance to vote for President for the coming year, under the supervision of Joy, one of our Federation’s WI advisers.  We are pleased to announce that Anne Clayton was re-elected as President for a second term.    We have also had offers of help with the Committee work so it looks like we are up and running again for another year!.   Details of  your new Committee Members will be published shortly.

Following the business side of the evening, we were all able to relax and enjoy a fun, social evening, while tucking into the generous Dutch Supper members had provided.   Then each table was given a cardboard cut out doll, told to get creative and make it an outfit!    I think you’ll agree the results were pretty impressive!.   Here’s the winning doll with her team:

We also had a very interesting jam jar raffle with members really making an effort to decorate their jar and provide some intriguing contents!   Here’s just a few of them:
