Stevens Street Allotments Market Harborough

Don’t forget it’s our allotment ‘launch event’ on Saturday 4th August at 5pm.   Just come and have a look.   No commitment required.  Enjoy a drink and cake with your WI friends.

The area is an oasis of calm, a very quiet and tranquil spot. At the moment there are soft fruits planted, jostaberries, strawberries, raspberries, gooseberries, but with some space to grow vegetables too. It will be your opportunity to examine the newly acquired plot and put forward any ideas and suggestions for the planting, maintenance and running of it.

Please let me know whether you wish to attend. Should you be unable to get there, and are still interested, please call Anne 07723 030944.

Just Walking in the Rain!

2018 Jul 29 - Walk to Gt Bowden2

A few rain showers didn’t stop our intrepid walking group setting off on a scenic walk to Great Bowden today.

We crossed through golden wheat fields and along the Grand Union Canal to historic Great Bowden, passing some beautiful houses and buildings along the way.   It was so refreshing to be out in the cool air after the very hot weather we have experienced recently.

2018 Jul 29 - Walk to Gt Bowden

After an hour or so we reached Welton’s’ cafe and shop in Great Bowden, where we settled ourselves down to enjoy coffees, delicious scones and teacakes, and most of all a lovely chat with our WI friends.

We arrived back invigorated and feeling very virtuous as we had walked around 10,000 steps!

We would love for you to join us on our next walk in 4 – 6 weeks’ time.   Remember walking will not only help you keep physically fit but helps your mental health too!  Look out for date and details on our website in due course.

Last Week at Market Harborough WI

Health Kick - Louise MerciecaLots going on at Market Harborough WI’s Monthly Meeting last Wednesday.

Our main event was our speaker, Louise Mercieca of The Health Kick, who came along to talk to us about healthy eating, particularly the importance of trying to reduce sugar in our diets.

Louise, a nutrition expert, explained that sugar is the leading cause of weight gain, 2nd biggest cause of cancer, is linked to Type 2 diabetes, and can lead to bad gut bacteria.

She also pointed out that a healthy diet is not just important for our physical health but also for our mental health as well.     An unhealthy diet can cause changes in our mood, leading to addictive tendencies.   Our self-esteem can be affected.   Also unhealthy eating is thought to have links to memory impairment and dementia.

Everytime a population adopts a Western-style diet it gets sick!

Louise was particularly passionate about ensuring that children learn to develop good eating habits at a very early age.   She told us that one in four five year old children have tooth decay in their milk teeth.   A quarter of children aged 2 to 10 years old are overweight or obese.   She has written a book, especially aimed at children – ‘How Food Shapes Your Child‘:

How-Food-shapes-your child book

She went on to explain that it is accepted among many scientists and health professionals that this generation will not live as long as the one before due to lifestyle choices and the associated diseases.

If you would like further information about how to purchase Louise’s  book or help with reversing these alarming trends, Louise can be contacted at The Health Kick as follows:
