Tonight the Craft Club is making paper craft boxes. They meet in the Lounge at the Congregational Church in Bowden Lane, 7 to 9 pm. Small charge for room hire and light refreshments available. New members very welcome.
They’ve also been planning ahead and topics for the next few months can be seen on the Craft Club page.
Tonight’s meeting began with ‘speed dating’. Members had several opportunities to have several ‘speedy’ chats to other members that they may not have met before, hopefully setting up the opportunity to get to know each other better at future meetings.
This set the basis for some lively discussions over cheese and wine to discuss the pros and cons of this year’s national resolutions: loneliness and plastic soup in our oceans.

Twiddlemuffs/sensory bands
The Craft Club is making knitting twiddle muffs/sensory bands when they meet this Thursday, 6 April. They meet in the Lounge at the Congregational Church in Bowden Lane, 7 to 9 pm. Small charge for room hire and light refreshments available. New members very welcome.
Having won a Style Consultation at the WI Christmas Raffle, I met with Victoria of Butterfly Image Consultancy in her studio in Lubenham, just a short 5-minute drive from Market Harborough. Victoria was very welcoming and once we were settled over a cup of tea, she asked questions to find out my style personality, what parts of my body I felt comfortable about (and what not!), and the type of famous personality I identified my look with. It emerged that I tend towards the Natural style, with a bit of Classic and a sprinkling of the Dramatic!
Victoria then advised all the different types of shapes of clothes that were best suited to my body shape and tailored this to how confident I feel about different parts of my body. She gave excellent advice on how to use colour and accessories to brighten and lift every day outfits as well as giving guidance on work wear, evening wear and everyday clothes choices. Victoria also identified which shops would best suit my style and she recommended specific items of clothing that would most suit me. I was relieved to find out that I didn’t have to try to remember all of Victoria’s suggestions as she noted down everything as we went along. I was also given a tailored advice sheet on how to develop a capsule outfit and a diagram showing ideal necklines and sleeve, coat and hem lengths.
It was a really enjoyable and interesting consultation. Victoria gave me a fresh pair of eyes on how I view myself and I feel confident about trying out some different styles of clothes. Victoria also offers colour and makeup consultations. Immaculately dressed in his butler attire, William French, former royal butler, regaled MHWI members with tales from his career with the royal family to current times. He began with explaining how he came to sign up for the Royal Navy at the tender age of 15 1/2, originally training as a chef but rapidly deciding he wanted to become a steward. Once trained, William served on land until the Falklands War beckoned. As a 17 1/2 year old he sailed on HMS Battleaxe to the Falklands where he was a gunner, but also was one of the first people to go on board HMS Gallahad as a first aider. Helping the injured was only one of the war incidents that rapidly led him to coping with sights that most of us hope never to see.
After William returned to the UK, he had the chance to work on the Royal Yacht Britannia. He grasped this opportunity and was able to serve many members of the royal family on trips around the world. Photos helped us to envisage rooms inside the yacht. William gave us humorous snippets of encounters with the royal family.
Following marriage, William left the Navy, moving on to work as a butler to many distinguished or famous people, including a lord, touring with the original cast of Calendar Girls and butlering for Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. The latter led to a story about ‘chicken fillets’ and an evening dress!
You can see more of William on Channel 5 this May, when he will on board well known yachts again, talking viewers through daily life as a butler. He is also on the One Show.
Federation have just issued details of a whole load of events around the city and county. You will be spoilt for choice on what to do. Why not get together with other MHWI members, car share and make an outing?
To tempt you, there is a garden tour at Brooksby College, followed by refreshments (including an evening option), There are two competitions: a quiz with a local venue in 
Little Bowden (let’s put MHWI on the map by getting a team together) and a photograph competition (you have all summer to click away).
Crafts include crochet and handstitched cards (panels for cards and memory books). You can also learn Indoor Bowls, join others at the monthly Lunch Club or attend a Faith Visit in Leicester. Looking ahead, there’s a holiday for members and non-members at Warners, Cricket St Thomas next January.
On Saturday, several MHWI members attended the Leicestershire & Rutland Federation of WIs ACM meeting (annual council meeting?) at Leicester Grammar School, Great Glen. Several sources have been in touch to say what a good day it was. Below are some pictures from those who attended. Isabel Aldrich’s rhubarb and ginger cake was ‘highly commended’ and tasted ‘lush’ she reported that evening!
Oh, and next year, is the centenary of this event and the Federation is seeking a large venue so as many Leicestershire and Rutland members can attend as possible – watch this space for details.
