Magic of Motown – 28 March 2014

Join us for a brilliant night out dancing away to Motown chartbusters.  This Motown tribute concert is just what you need to relax and dance away to your heart’s content.  It’s open to non-members, too.

It will be a dazzling show, gorgeous costumes and superb Motown sixties hits  (How do I know?  I went this year, thoroughly enjoyed and only wished I was in the dancing area as I was ‘dancing in my seat’ all night!)

IncludeThe Magic of Motown - The Reach Out Tours all-time favourites; Stop in the Name of Love; Get Ready; I Want You Back; I Heard It Through The Grapevine; Signed, Sealed, Delivered; I Can’t Help Myself & more. Sixties classics give way to present-day masterpieces from Lionel Richie and Diana Ross.

It’s £22.50, payable in advance by the December monthly meeting (cash or cheque).  If we can get a group discount, then any savings will be used to help people share cars and parking costs (and maybe go towards a drink).

So, book your place now – at the October, November or December monthly meeting.

Then join this new group meeting for first time at the Market Harborough Leisure Centre (on the Northampton Road) on Monday 23 September 2013, 9 to 10 am.  Hazel Stacey, our President, will be leading the group.  Small charge for the cost of the court hire.

Chocoholics Evening – pure indulgence!

Pure indulgence!  Superb fun!  That’s the verdict from members and guests of the Market Harborough WI who made the Chocoholics Evening on the 2nd October such a success.

‘A cracking evening, with everyone enjoying themselves’ says Hazel Stacey, President.  ‘There was loads for people to do, including Chocolate Bingo and Chocolate Olympics.  All the games involved chocolate, whether it be a jigsaw, building the tallest tower or icing a cake blindfolded!’
A recent visit to a cash and carry had raided their chocolate ranges!  Then followed a sweatshop evening when committee members sorted and bagged prizes, nibbling any leftovers.  For the Chocoholics Evening prizes formed the basis of various competitions, including Name the Teddy and Treasure Chest.  The first to sell out was Chocolate Tombola.
Several members made gorgeous chocolate cakes and our tastebuds were in heaven as we sampled them and voted for the best one.
Everyone joined in to play Chocolate Bingo followed by Chocolate Olympics.  Players from each team took turns to build a chocolate tower, complete a chocolate bar jigsaw, eat a chocolate mint balanced on their forehead, transfer chocolate ball sweets from one dish to another using a straw and, finally, to decorate a cake with cream and coloured sweets (the trick? – to do it blindfolded!).

Hazel concludes, ‘Off to bed to dream of the chocolate that didn’t touch my lips.’ (A confirmed chocoholic, she is doing a ‘giving up’ fund raising event for work this month.  Not a good time to stage the Chocoholics evening!

New members – 15 months for the price of 12!

New members can join from October and get 15 months for the price of 12.  £34.70 will take you through to December 14.  Not bad for an evening out each month, plus the chance to take part in lots of social activities.

Fun evening at our second AGM!

Market Harborough WI celebrated its second, successful year last night at the AGM, ably led by our President, Hazel Stacey, in her own inimitable style.  Who else could  get away with not having a Minutes Secretary this year in front of the local Federation representative, Caroline?  The good news is that we do now have one.  Karen stepped up (apologies not sure of your last name at the moment).  Claire Salisbury also stepped up to become Marketing and Social Media Secretary.  Thank you, too, to Vicky Watts who has stepped down from Secretary/PR following the birth of her first baby

Yes, seriously, we have had another excellent year, maintaining a good membership.  Monthly meetings have had good attendances with lots of different activities and speakers.  There was some debate whether this was the Egyptian Dancing or Self Defence!

Finances are looking healthy, too, thanks to the hard work of the Committee organising the fashion show, raffle and refreshments, and, of course, to you, the members for supporting these so generously.

We then had a lovely Dutch supper, members bringing a whole range of savoury and sweet nibbles to tempt everyone.  We loved the cupcakes (see picture below) with the WI logo and Inspiring Women.

Finally, members tested their knowledge on a food and drinks quiz, including a ‘name the chef’ round and Pictionary.  Here’s a question for you – drawing a Danish pastry was easy but, how do you sketch an egg sandwich?!  Team WInners came top – well done!

Chocolate night – social evening – 2 October 2013

An indulgent evening and an early chance to stock up with goodies for Halloween and (dare I say it – Yes, I will as Simon Mayo said on Radio 2 this teatime that it was only 99 days to go!?) Christmas.
Chocolate-w500-h500Members are invited to come along to the Congregational Church Hall in Bowden Lane at 7.30 pm until  9.30pm on Wednesday 2nd October.  Entrance is free and then games and refreshments at a charge.  The night will consist of Choc Olympics, Chocolate Bingo, stalls and games including a Chocolate cake competition.

Sweatshop girls!

Your committee met recently to finalise the arrangements for the Chocoholics evening on Wednesday 2 October at 7.30 pm at the Congregational Church, Bowden Lane, Market Harborough – make sure the date’s in your diary, and you can bring a friend, too.  Here’s Hazel working us hard packing up all the prizes:

September’s monthly meeting

Wednesday 25th September is our second Annual General Meeting.  This will be followed by a Dutch Supper (members bring food or nibbles to share) and Food and Drink Quiz.  It should be a good, fun evening and the chance to mix and meet new people as you test your knowledge of food and wine.

The evening begins at 7.30 pm.  If you really want to relax and have a drink, then bring a bottle of wine and a glass or two to share with members.
