It’s official – it’s 10s all round with the Jerusalem Jammers

Yes, it’s true!  Market Harborough WI members scored 10s all round when they joined in the dancing with the Jerusalem Jammers.
Jerusalem Jammers (3)-w500-h500
tf the February monthly meeting last night, the Jerusalem Jammers, the only WI group in the country, entertained members with displays of their Morris dancing.  They were accompanied by their own small troupe of musicians.
This unique group has been running for 31 years and is based in Leicestershire.  The longest serving members have also been members for that length of time, joining at its inception in 1982.  They meet monthly to practise, as well as performing at many events around the county and country.  The group includes mother and daughter.
Many of the dances are now over 60 years’ old and originate from local villages, which is reflected in their names.   All dances performed were for female dancers, with the exception of the last one which was originally for men.  New dances are bought from the Morris Federation, of which the Jammers are members.

Members try out Tai Chi

Tai Chi, Jan 14 (6)-w500-h500Laraine Tucker, String of Pearls Tai Chi, gave members a detailed insight into the art of Tai Chi last night.  Throughout the evening, Laraine expertly demonstrated several sequences of Tai Chi movements to music, amazing members with her gracefulness.  Members also had the opportunity to practise this ancient art themselves, initially working on their stance, then into thinking about relaxation before practising some basic movements.

Laraine explained that Tai Chi not only keeps the body really supple, often being practised on a daily basis outdoors in China, but also gives it the chance to rebalance and help relieve problems with aches, pains and joints.  She added that many of the movements are based on the way animals move.  Check out her website for more details, plus the courses she offers (see link above).

Fun evening planned for December’s meeting

Do make sure Wednesday 18th December is in your diary.  It’s 7.30 pm at the Congregational Church, Bowden Lane.  There’s lots happening and it should be a great start to Christmas festivities.

Local distillery, Two Birds Countryside Spirit (click to find out more and why they are so special), will be visiting with a chance to taste their locally produced spirits: London Dry Gin, Vodka and Absinthe.  You will also be able to buy their products at a discounted price for the evening, so a great chance to complete your Christmas shopping, while enjoying an evening with friends!

‘Chrisolympics’ are planned.  So, again, lots of fun for everyone as we can all take part in some crazy seasonal games.

Do bring a plate of nibbles to share – it’s a Dutch supper.  If you want to share a glass of wine with other members, then do bring a bottle and some glasses.

Looking forward to another great evening to celebrate the end of Market Harborough WI’s second, very successful year.  See you there!

Christmas card fun

Card making, Nov 13 (1)-w500-h500

Evanda Greenwood and her ‘sis’ Marie

A huge group of Market Harborough WI members and 4 visitors thoroughly enjoyed themselves this week making their own, unique Christmas Card.

Evanda Greenwood, Social Secretary, and her ‘sis’ Marie, supplied each member with a card kit in a cellophane pack.  Armed with instructions, members and visitors had great fun making their cards.  We learned how to add peel off gold borders and lettering, scoring bauble shapes with a cocktail stick so we could fold and glue to create an illusion of overlapping shapes, finishing off with gold hangers on raised sticky pads.  We proudly took them home to share with families. Click to see more pictures.

Marie had travelled up from the south coast to help Evanda.  She displays some of her delightful handbag gift bags in the picture above.

Thank you for a great evening.

Things to bring to Wednesday’s meeting

Evanda Greenwood, Social Programme Secretary, is leading the monthly meeting on 27 November.  She will be showing us how to make a Christmas card.  Please bring a ruler and pencil and, if possible, a fine line marker/pen in red or green.  Should be a fun evening – see you then!

Busy beadmakers

Market Harborough WI members worked busily all evening, trying their hand at beadmaking.  They made a long, pendant style necklace or a keyring/handbag charm.  Andrea Greenaway, from Leicestershire Craft Centre, was the visiting speaker.  She shared beautiful, colourful samples of her work based on crafts that are taught at the Centre in High Street, Market Harborough.

Andrea passed around two delightful necklaces that she had learned how to make herself recently whilst attending silversmithing courses (I hope I have the techniques right!).

She then demonstrated the art of simple beadmaking (or so we thought).  She showed us how to take a long piece of thick thread, fold it into four and then knot it to form your own tailor made necklace or to tie it to a keyring.  Then came the real challenge!  Having chosen our selected beads, which came in a huge variety of colours, sizes and textures, we had to thread the signature bead – not too difficult, as these tended to come with large holes.  So far, so good.  However, then we faced some real challenges for the evening, namely the ability to see small holes, licking the end of your thread to get a point and trying to get it through the holes in the beads.  Not so easy, as the hole sizes varied greatly, so, very quickly, carefully chosen, colour coded patterns were abandoned!  However, lots of good humour plus the encouragement of fellow WI members, and most people successfully produced their first piece of beadwork.  They proudly display their handiwork below.

Thank you, Andrea, for sharing your skills and patiently helping and encouraging us as we took our first, tentative steps.  Another excellent evening!
