Self defence at our fingertips

A big thank you to Mark Rowley of Natural Self Defence who introduced members to this fascinating skill.  I certainly came away much more confident that I had picked up some easy tips to defend myself with, should I ever need to do so: finger darts, ear clapping, edge of hand, pinching the inner thigh, kicking shins or ankles, plus pressing that small triangle at the base of your neck where it meets the chest.  My partner now trembles as I dart about the house practising my moves!

Mark’s style of delivery was humourous throughout the evening.  He began by explaining why natural self defence became a passion:  as a young man in his twenties he was attacked by 3 people, thought it was macho to fight back, and ended up in hospital with several injuries, including being stabbed in the back.  He also gave members a brief history of the development of self defence.

Finally, Mark invited volunteers to help him demonstrate some very useful techniques.  Thanks to Fiona, Gemma, Tina (not sure what your partner will make of this picture!) and Jo.

Clairvoyance evening success

Cystal ball-w500-h500A belated thanks to clairvoyant, Alison, from Australia, who met with Market Harborough WI members and visitors at the Angel Hotel in Market Harborough on 9 January.  After a delicious meal Alison demonstrated her clairvoyance skills.

Lynda Meadows, Prgramme Secretary says, “Brilliant night! Allison is a great medium and I have now seen her on several occasions. Alison’s bubbly personality and incredible ability ensures a relaxed and fascinating evening. Looking forward to seeing her again.”

WI member Tina Fortum and her daughter both attended, too.  Tina reports, “Both Gemma and myself thoroughly enjoyed the evening with Alison.  We found it not only fascinating but extremely enjoyable. She made everyone feel at ease when it came to personal issues. We would very much want to attend another evening with Alison if the opportunity arises.  We wouldn’t hesitate in recommending a medium evening with her to friends and family.”

Christmas bunting

Market Harborough WI members proudly displayed their creative skills by entering bunting made for Christmas in a competition at the December meeting.  Enormous detail was used and many must have taken hours to complete!

Each piece was numbered and members voted for their favourite.  The winning item was made by WI member, Carla, who had done a picture of Father Christmas – spot number 3 on the pictures below.

Practise your creative skills with Christmas bunting

At the November meeting, don’t forget to pick up your template to make your Christmas bunting to bring along to the Christmas meeting in December.  Making the bunting for the Jubliee earlier this year proved so popular that the Committee has decided to give members the opportunity to show off their skills again.  If you’re stuck for ideas, then just spend a few minutes browsing the internet.

All shot out at Laser Force!

‘Nuked’, ‘targets’, ‘rapid fire’ and ‘warbotic’ were all new terms we came across when a group of us visited Laser Force in Northampton last night.  Some of us learned them alot quicker than others and how to use them to score loads more points, as well as how to fire accurately at opponents to give them ‘time out’ (simply meaning they couldn’t fire for a few seconds and get you back!).

It was great fun running around the obstacles in the semi-darkness and ‘forest’, trying to hit targets to score lots of extra points, firing at others and hiding to avoid being hit yourself.  Our host at Laser Force ably and humorously briefed us before each of the 3 games, before taking us into the armoury each time to put on the harness and get your ‘gun’.  What I didn’t realise initially was that each piece of armour was named.  After each game we had a debrief in front of a computer screen showing everyone’s scores and how many targets they had hit (or not)!  Good fun and a chance to meet new people!
