The National Federation of Women’s Institutes (NFWI) is running a great campaign to support our high streets. As many of you already know, we have a wonderful high street with many independent shops. In order to promote our local businesses, we are sourcing nearly all the prizes for our fantastic Christmas Raffle from shops and businesses based in Market Harborough.
Watch this space for those who have been kind enough to donate to our Christmas 2014 raffle and please support them by shopping locally whenever you can.

Online Campaign Dispels Stereotypes of the WI
A Cambridge branch of the WI set out to use social media to dispel some myths and stereotypes about the WI. “We know we aren’t pearl clutching over opinionated interfering old battle-axes, but it’s time we told the rest of the world that!”
Members were asked to post a picture of themselves on Facebook on 1st October holding a sign saying “I am WI” and use the hash tag #iamwi.
The results are wonderful and inspiring and show that WI members come from all walks of life and have a wide range of interests.

Sloe and apple jelly – tasty, original WI recipe for you to try
Gemma Underwood says, ‘Earlier this year i collected some sloes but instead of making the obvious Sloe Gin i had a look through a preserves book that i had to see if i could make anything else and i found a recipe for Sloe and Apple Jelly and i was surprised how easy it was to make, i did double the mixture and i ended up with 6 jars of jelly.Looking at the book again yesterday

Coffee morning – Saturday 5 July 2014
If you haven’t done so already, make sure you put this date in your diary and tell your family and friends, too. Our major, annual fund raising event this year is to be a Coffee Morning to be held at the Market Harborough Theatre in Adam and Eve Street (near the council offices/new library and museum and just behind the Old Grammar School on High Street). Entry is free. The event will run from 9 am until lunchtime.
We need members’ help in a number of ways, please.
- Home made cakes to sell at the event and to be sold with refreshments**
- Prizes for the tombola stall – anything, as long as it is within its sold by date. Please bring these by the June meeting on 25th
- Volunteers to help on a rota basis (2 hour slots) to make and serve refreshments, manage the cake and tombola stalls and maybe outside to encourage passers by to pop in for a coffee
** Cakes can be dropped off at the Leicestershire and Rutland Federation quiz night at the Congregational Church Hall on the Friday evening, the 4th (a couple of members will be doing the refreshments). Or, you can drop them off at 11 Ashley Way, Market Harborough Le16 7XD on the 4th You can also leave them in the porch, unless it is a really hot day! Alternatively, call 07906 857 133 if you would like your cake to be collected. Lastly, you can drop them off at the Theatre on the morning of the 5th July between 8.15 am and 9 am.
Cellophane, boxes and paper plates for presenting your cake for sale will be available at the June meeting.

Dairy Farm Visit – last chance to book tonight
The next social event is for the Dairy Farm Visit which is on 7th May 2014. It begins at 7pm and finishes around 9pm with refreshments. There is a walk up the fields to see the cows grazing etc, and then around the farm buildings to see the baby calves and the milking parlour. Jane would recommend wellingtons, as there’s always plenty of cow poo about! It is £5 per person payable at tonight’s monthly meeting.

Leicester Hedgehog Rescue – what’s it all about?
Join Colleen Powell from Leicester Hedgehog Rescue, on Wednesday 26 March, to find out how they are caring for these creatures in their gardens, some in their own hedgehog hospitals. There’ll be a chance to see a young hedgehog close up. You’ll also pick up tips on how to make your own garden a safer place for hedgehogs.
